Maltese Traditions

Maltese traditions.
The Maltese Islands have a number of religious festivities and cultural events that take place every year. Feast days are the life of this small Island and some holy days are actually national holidays. Such as the feast of St. Mary which is held in mid- August. Maltese people are also known for fireworks and Catherine wheels. My village feast in Mqabba, is held on the third week of June. The feast of ‘Madonna tal-Gilju’ is popular for the fireworks display that is held on Saturday. In Zejtun there are two feasts the Zejtun Band and the Beland Band. These two feasts are both popular. These feasts are also held on the third week of June. I guess my friends and I live for the feast in our towns : ) !

    1. The main religion of the Maltese is the Catholic Religion. However there are many other religions that are practiced in Malta.

Catherine Wheels are similar to ferris wheels but they are fireworks. When they are lit up they go round and create patterns and colours made with fire.

We have many traditions and feasts. Each village has its own feast and as a country we celebrate traditional feasts. The next feast we have is 10th February which is the feast of Saint Paul. We have a school holiday. We celebrate the day when this saint was shipwrecked in Malta and gave us our Catholic religion.

Thank you for your interesting questions

    1. The Zejtun Band and Beland Band are 2 band clubs both from Zejtun. Both bands play during the village festa in June. They are both very good bands and they compete with each other on who plays the best. The villagers side with one band or another and sometimes there are hot arguments.

In Malta we have many traditions because we have a rich history that was left behind by all the countries who ruled Malta. So we have food that has Libyan, Italian and English influences. Christmas traditions that are similar to the British traditions. Even some words originate from these countries. For example in French you say Chemise for shirt. In Maltese we call it qmis. It comes from French!

There are 3 main islands that are Malta, Gozo and Comino. There are a few very tiny islands where no one lives.

    1. The most popular traditions in Malta are the village feasts. The Maltese people like to party and to be loud. During the feast the village is very noisy with the band playing music and very loud fireworks in the sky at night. The band plays marches in the street and the villagers like to dance to these marches. A lot of paper is thrown from the roofs of houses. People drink a lot of beer during these feasts

    1. We like your question of why are fireworks associated with feasts. We do not know but we are curious and are going to ask around in our village. Thank you

    2. I did some research this morning and found out that the Maltese feasts stretches back to the 16th century. It's a long way back!! They didn't celebrate it the way we do it now. They only used to celebrate the inner feast, that is held in church. We still celebrate the inner feast but nowadays we celebrate the outdoor festivities too with fireworks, decorations and the brass band playing along marches :).
